What’s the difference between RJO20 and 8500?

Before writing the actual difference, I’m going to write a short technical specification for both models. Theres just so much to see what each model brings and what to expect.

It is hard to describe the difference between the Chamberlain RJO20 vs LiftMaster 8500 without introducing each. These are competitive models from different brands. Now Chamberlain Group is the parent Company for both Chamberlain and LiftMaster, however these two brands don’t share production lines and other relevant points.

Chamberlain RJO20 is a wall-mount model with a direct drive system. By installing a wall-mount garage door opener you’ll save garage space.

RJO20 includes Internet Gateway for smartphone App control via MyQ. This means that you can control your garage door, and garage light from the distance. Also, you can receive notifications on your smartphone no matter where you are.

Chamberlain RJO20 delivers an Automatic Garage Door Lock. Your garage door stays secured every time it closes. A side-mount opener with a direct drive works without producing any noise. It is designed to operate silently, with zero noise, and without vibrations.

LiftMaster 8500 short description

Just like it opponent, the LiftMaster 8500 is side mount direct drive thats a well-known and widely-used model for residential garage doors made by LiftMaster.

For the price you’ll pay, the 8500 delivers a lot of features, and most importantly, you’ll get a proven quality.

The LiftMaster 8500 is a wall-mount model with a belt-drive system.

It is MyQ enabled, which means that the 8500 is capable of smart options if you buy an 828LM Internet Gateway that is sold separately. You can also purchase a battery backup separately if you so desire.

For maximum security, the LiftMaster 8500 has Secure Code technology. When you’re using a remote, each time you press a button, the remote sends a secure code to the garage door opener making it very hard to be hacked or tampered with.

The LiftMaster 8500 has an Automatic Garage Door Lock that uses deadbolts to lock your door after closing. Your garage stays secured after the door closes.

So as you can see there are a lot of similarities between each of these units. Yet, some differences exist, and I’m going to dive into a little more detail about those differences.

Both openers are the perfect combination of space-saving design and reliable functionality. They both are (RJO20 and 8500) wall-mounted, saving ceiling space and delivering the most robust onboard computerization. In general, these garage door openers are very attractive to homeowners who prize automation and connectivity. On the other hand, all these new technologies come at a bit higher price.

The remote light is placed on the ceiling, within 6 ft. of the outlet. Both, Chamberlain RJO20 and LiftMaster 8500 are using A19 incandescent or compact fluorescent bulbs (100 watts per bulb maximum).

RJO20 requirements

Sectional garage door only:

  • Standard sectional door up to 14 feet high, but only up to 180 sq.ft.
  • Standard sectional door up to 18 feet wide, but only up to 180 sq.ft.
  • Standard sectional high lift (up to 54 inches of high lift).

8500 requirements

This garage door opener is compatible with:

  • Doors that use a torsion bar and springs. The torsion bar must be 1-inch diameter.
  • 4-6 inch drums, not to be used on tapered drums over 6 inches.
  • 3 to 3.9-inch drums may be used on doors up to 430lbs.
  • High lift (up to 54 inches high) and standard lift sectional doors up to 14 feet high.
  • Doors up to 18 feet wide.
  • Doors up to 180 sq.ft.

Both now are outdated models, so if the newest and best up to date unit is what you’re after. I suggest trying one of the new Chamberlain series, or new LiftMaster new series, depending on your preferences.
